Bats Heat Up Late in Baseball’s 5-2 Win
April 14, 2018
STOCKTON, Calif. — Austin Pinorini hit a two-run, eighth-inning homer to put Gonzaga baseball in the lead for good in a 5-2 win at Pacific on Saturday evening.
Gonzaga’s offense had been kept scoreless through the first seven innings, but the Zags (17-16, 8-6) got three in the eighth and two more in the ninth for the come-from-behind win over Pacific (14-19, 5-9).
“That was a great job by the offense to stay with it, and Pinorini came through with the big hit we’ve been looking for,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “Alek Jacob gave us another really competitive start and Casey Legumina was great the last two innings. Tomorrow is a huge opportunity for us to try to win a series on the road.”
GU’s freshman starter Alek Jacob pitched another fantastic game, going 7.0 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He earned the win and moved his season record to 3-3. Casey Legumina picked up a two-inning save, his ninth save of the year, allowing no runs and one hit to go along with five strikeouts and one walk.
Jacob cruised through the first three innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five in the span. But, Pacific got on the board in the fourth with a two-out, bases-loaded single that brought home a pair of runs. GU catcher Slade Heggen threw out a runner trying to advance to third on the play to end the threat.
After going scoreless into the eighth, GU’s offense heated up for the first time in the series. The Zags put two on with one out and Isaac Barrera pushed the first run across with a sacrifice fly to bring GU within one. Pinorini then followed with his two-run, opposite-field homer, his third of the year, for the Zags first lead.
Gunnar Schubert knocked home a pair in the top of the ninth for two insurance runs before Legumina kept Pacific off the scoreboard for the second straight inning to close the game out.
The Zags and Tigers will wrap the series on Sunday in Stockton, Calif., with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Live coverage will be available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.
