Baseball Pounds Out 17 Hits In Loss At LMU

LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount University (22-17, 9-7 WCC) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Thursday afternoon as the host Lions held on for a 7-5 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (15-20-1, 4-12 WCC) at Page Stadium.

The contest opened as a see-saw battle with LMU jumping on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Jonathan Higashi and Sean Smith.

Gonzaga cut into the lead in the top of the second as Chris Sinner drove home the Bulldogs first run with a bases loaded single up the middle. GU then tied the contest in the top of the third on a Jeff Culpepper sacrifice fly.

Loyola Marymount tacked on two more runs in their half of the third as Higashi again drove home a run. Jonathan Oller also added an RBI single to put LMU back in front 4-2.

Eric Rodland's second double of the game trimmed the Lions lead down to one run in the fourth before LMU exploded in the bottom of the inning. Higashi again victimized the Bulldogs staff with his third RBI against starter Patrick Donovan (1-4). Chris Pettit and Joe Frazee added RBI singles in the inning before Sean Lichter could get Gonzaga out of the inning.

The Bulldogs added another single run in the top of the fifth as Danny Evans singled to left against Lions starter Vincent Cordova. Cordova (5-3) worked through into the seventh before giving way to the Lions bullpen. Gonzaga had one last rally in the ninth as Matt Reding drove home the Bulldogs final run before Stephan Kahn could close the door on the Zags. Kahn collected the final two outs for his sixth save of the season.



Sam Hess, Evans and Sinner all finished with three hits for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs pounded out 17 hits on the day. Higashi was one of four Lions to collect two hits as LMU finished with 12 hits.
