Offense Backs Gonzales Strong Start, Zags Take Series From LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Billy Moon's two-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning as the 24th-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team defeated Loyola Marymount University 7-1 Sunday in the rubber match of the West Coast Conference series.

In addition to winning the three-game series over the Lions (20-14, 4-2 WCC), the Bulldogs (21-11-1, 5-1 WCC) also won the battle for sole possession of first place in the WCC standings.

Gonzaga trailed 1-0 after starter Marco Gonzales (6-2) gave up a solo home run in the second inning but the Bulldogs tied the game in the third inning and the freshman Gonzales settled down and finished the day striking out five and allowing three hits in 7
1/3 innings to win his sixth consecutive game.

Tyler Chism led the offense with three hits including a double. Cameron Edman hit a pair of doubles to join Chism, Moon and Eric Lane as the only Bulldogs to register multiple hits in the afternoon.

The Lions used five pitchers. Starter Aaron Griffin (5-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs in four innings.

The Bulldogs offensive explosion in the fourth inning started with Lane getting hit by Griffin. Chism singled on a bunt down the third base line and Moon gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead with a two-run double to right center field. Royce Bolinger followed with a single through the left side and Edman drove in the Bulldogs fourth run with a ground-rule double to left center. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Andy Hunter hit a ground out RBI to the shortstop to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.



Lane again led off the sixth inning with a double to left center field and after he advanced to third on another bunt single, Bolinger hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center field to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead.

Keegan Acker got the eighth inning started with a single to right center field and two batters later, Moon brought in the Bulldogs seventh run with a single to left field.

Cody Martin came into the game in the eighth inning with one out and the senior finished the game with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Bulldogs return to the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field to play five games in six days. The home stand starts with Saint Mary's College Thursday at 6 p.m.
