Baseball Hammers Whitworth 11-2
April 22, 2003
SPOKANE, Wash. - Playing their first home game at Spokane Falls Community College, the Gonzaga Bulldogs (18-20-1) exploded for 16 hits as they hammered Whitworth College, 11-2, in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon. Gonzaga pitchers limited Whitworth (11-17-1) to just two hits on the afternoon as the Bulldogs won their third straight game.
Gonzaga scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Pirates starter Kurt Reese (3-3) and that proved to be all the offense the Bulldogs would need. Jeff Culpepper started the scoring run with a triple to right center that scored Eric Rodland. Culpepper would come around to score on a David Johnson RBI single to right. Danny Evans drove home the Bulldogs final run of the inning on a infield ground out.
Kris White (1-0) entered in relief of Bulldogs starter Sean Lichter in the third inning and worked 2.2 innings of shutout baseball to pick up his first collegiate win. Eric Everson and Matt Reding closed out the game with four hitless innings behind White.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning as they increased their lead with a four-run outburst. Rodland, Gordon Corder and Johnson all had home runs in the inning, Corder connecting for a two-run shot. Rodland would add an RBI triple in the seventh as the Bulldogs tacked on two more runs.
Rodland finished the day 4-for-5 while Culpepper, Corder, Johnson, Evans and Nick Froman all finished with two hits. Daniel Gebbers and John Gebbers had the lone Whitworth hits, John Gebbers driving home the Pirates first run with his RBI single in the first.
Gonzaga returns to action on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Bulldogs host WCC West Division leader San Diego at Spokane Falls Community College. The two teams will play three games at SFCC with Saturday's game starting at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game moved up to a noon start.
