Big Inning By USD Leads To Game Two Loss For Zags

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Steven Halcomb produced a three-hit game for Gonzaga University who suffered an 18-5 defeat to the University of San Diego in game two of this West Coast Conference weekend series Saturday afternoon.
Halcomb finished the day 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs who surrendered the 18 runs on 24 hits to fall to 13-26-1 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play. San Diego improved to 22-15 overall and 8-0 in the WCC.
The Toreros used 13 hits to score 13 runs in the third inning and later added four runs in the eighth.
Gonzaga picked up a run in the third on an RBI ground out by Drew Heid who drove home Ernesto Ortiz after he had tripled the at-bat prior. Gonzaga picked up three runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Mark Castellitto and a two-run base-hit by Chris Sturdivant. Castellitto added another RBI in the eighth on a double to cap the Bulldogs scoring.
Heid picked up two hits to extend his hitting streak to a team current best nine games.
The Zags and Toreros close out the series 1 p.m. Sunday.
