April 25, 2008
Moraga, Calif. - Matt Fields allowed 3 hits in just over 7.0 frames while striking out eight, as the Gonzaga University baseball team earned an 11-3 victory over Saint Mary's College Friday in Moraga, Calif. The game was the opening tilt of a three-game West Coast Conference series.
Fields (7-2) posted his second straight impressive outing as the junior allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight. The GU (24-17, 6-6 WCC) starter earned the victory after pitching 7.0 innings, while also facing the lead off batter of the eighth inning. Saint Mary's (20-18-1, 4-9 WCC) starter Scott Schneider (5-4) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks over 5.0 frames.
Drew Heid led Gonzaga at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Three of the sophomore's four hits were doubles, tying the Bulldog record for doubles in a game. Heid now shares the record with teammates Mark Castellitto and Ryan Wiegand.
Gonzaga broke the game open in the third inning, taking a 5-0 lead. In the inning, the Bulldogs rallied for the five runs on four hits, an error and a sacrifice. Evan Wells, Marcus McKimmy, Wiegand and Castellitto each drove in runs during the frame, as Heid, Wells, Wiegand and Tyson Van Winkle all scored. Castellitto highlighted the inning, thanks to a two-run double.
Fields held the Gaels hitless until the fifth, when Justin Fazio recoded SMC's first base hit - a double to right field.
The Zags added four additional runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 9-0. With one out, Wiegand reached first on a walk, before advancing to third on a double by Van Winkle. Castellitto then singled, scoring Wiegand and placing runners in the corners. Grant Kveder drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice during the next at-bat. Following a walk to Winston, Heid recorded his second double of the game - this time a two-run hit that scored Castellitto and Winston.
Heid drove in another run in the top of the seventh thanks to an infield single that plated Van Winkle. Wells drove in the second run of the frame as he hit into a fielder's choice, which scored Kveder.
Saint Mary's avoided the shutout by posting three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Following a single to open the frame, pinch hitter Ryan Young hit a two-run home run to break the Zags' run at blanking the Gaels. Kenny Fuglerud drove in SMC's final run of the game four batters later with a single to right.
The Bulldogs and Gaels will return to the field Saturday for the second game of the three-game conference series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
