Bulldogs Fall In Series Finale At San Diego
April 25, 2010
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Drew Heid homered to extend his hitting streak to ten games and Mark Castellitto produced three hits for Gonzaga University who lost a 17-7 decision to the University of San Diego in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs dropped to 13-27-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the West Coast Conference while San Diego improved to 23-15 overall and 9-0 in conference play after taking all three games from the Zags over the weekend.
Gonzaga had things going early on as Heid led off the game with a walk and Steven Halcomb followed with a double into the right centerfield gap to put runners on second and third. Castellitto picked up his first hit of the afternoon, singling back up the middle to drive home Heid. One batter later Clayton Eslick gave the Zags a 2-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Halcomb.
Bulldogs starting pitcher Liam Baron worked around a Torero hit in the first innings and a walk in the second inning to keep the lead at 2-0 but ran into trouble in the third. San Diego opened the third with a home run before the next seven hitters recorded hits to push four more runs across and build a 5-2 lead through three complete innings.
Heid made it a 5-3 game in the fifth, launching a two-out home run over the right centerfield fence for his seventh long ball of the season. USD came right back in their half of the frame, pushing two runs across in the fifth before exploding for seven runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to open their lead up to 17-3.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a two-game series against the University of Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday in Seattle, Wash.
