Moraga, Calif. - Jason Chatwood and Drew Heid each posted four hits as the Gonzaga University baseball team posted 18-5 victory over Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. The victory provided the Bulldogs with a 2-1 West Coast Conference series victory over the Gaels.

Gonzaga (25-18, 7-7 WCC) starter Cody Martin (3-0) earned the victory after allowing three runs on 11 hits over 5.0 innings. CJ McClure and Brandon Harmon made appearances out of the bullpen for the Zags. Harmon's appearance was the 82nd of his career, setting a Gonzaga record for all-time appearances. Saint Mary's (21-19-1, 5-10 WCC) starter Justin Kuks (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on as many hits in the opening three frames.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. In the frame, Tyson Van Winkle and Grant Kveder recorded runs batted in as Van Winkle earned one with a single and Kveder as he was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.

GU added another run in the top o the second with a sacrifice fly by Marcus McKimmy. Heid, who reached on a bunt single, scored on the play.

The Gaels narrowed the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Both runs were plated on a two-run double by Anthony Aliotti.

Mark Castellitto added another run on the board for Gonzaga in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run to left center.

 

 

Saint Mary's closed its deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning as Brian Hawkins scored on a fielder's choice.

Gonzaga broke open the score in the top of the sixth, as it exploded for five runs. Ryan Wiegand, Castellitto and Kvder all drove in runs on the inning, as the Bulldogs posted five hits and all five runs with two outs.

The Bulldogs added another five runs in the seventh inning, taking a 14-3 lead. In the inning, GU rallied for five hits including doubles by Heid, McKimmy and Kveder.

GU capped its scoring in the ninth, adding four additional runs. Following back-to-back walks, pinch hitter Shawn Wayt hit a three-run jack before the next batter, pinch hitter Michael Rhodes went yard with a solo shot.

The Gaels posted two runs in the ninth, to finalize the score at 18-5. Kyle Jensen and Kenny Fuglerud earned runs batted in for SMC during the inning.

The Bulldogs return home Tuesday, to host two-time defending national champion Oregon State University for a two-game series at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
