Bulldogs Even Series With 1-0 Victory

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Clayton Mortensen threw a complete-game shutout while striking out 10 as the Gonzaga University baseball team edged out the University of San Francisco 1-0 at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco, Calif. The Zags' victory evens the three-game West Coast Conference series with the Dons at one game a piece.
Gonzaga improves its overall record to 27-20 with the win, including 10-4 against conference foes. The loss drops the Dons to 22-23 for the season and 5-9 in league play.
Mortensen (6-2) threw his fourth complete game of the season en route to the victory. The senior from Rexburg, Idaho allowed no runs on four hits while striking out 10 and allowing no walks in his 9.0 innings of work. USF starter Jason Dufloth (5-4) suffered the loss allowing one unearned run on eight hits and no walks in 7.1 innings.
The lone run of the contest was scored in the top of the eighth inning by the Bulldogs' Bryan Winston. With one out in the frame, Winston singled through the right side to reach base before advancing to second on a single by Darin Holcomb. Winston would come around to score on a San Francisco error to give Gonzaga the game winning run.
Winston, Holcomb and Dustin Colclough led all Bulldog batters with two hits a piece. Ryan Wiegand and Shawn Wayt reach posted a hit for the Zags as well. All of Gonzaga's hits were singles, as no extra base hits were record during the game by either team.
The win moves the Zags a half game back of No. 12 University of Pepperdine for second place in the WCC standings, as well as a game and a half back of No. 16 University of San Diego for first place. Pepperdine and San Diego play a three-game series this weekend. Friday, the Toreros won the series opener 10-3, with the two remaining games to be played Sunday and Monday.
The Bulldogs and Dons will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday. Josh Monroe (6-2) is expected to earn the start for the Zags when the game begins at 1 p.m.
