Gonzales, Chism Lead Zags To Three-Game Sweep Over Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Marco Gonzales became the first Gonzaga University pitcher to record his seventh win of the season as the Bulldogs beat Santa Clara University 8-3 to complete the three-game West Coast Conference series sweep Sunday.
Gonzales (7-2) threw six strong innings, striking out five and allowing two earned runs on six hits. Sunday would also be a memorable day for Cody Martin, who not only pitched three shutout innings but also recorded his first collegiate hit, a leadoff double to left field in the ninth inning.
Santa Clara's (15-25, 2-10 WCC) Brock Simon (3-6) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
Royce Bolinger led off the second inning with a walk and Cameron Edman scored in the first run of the game with a double to left field. Two batters later, Sturdivant hit a RBI single to center field to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added their third run an inning later when Chism was hit by Simon to start the inning and after two walks and a sacrifice bunt, Clayton Eslick singled to left field to bring in Chism.
The Broncos scored their first run of the series with a leadoff home run in the third inning.
Sturdivant led off the fourth inning with a single to center field, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Eric Lane would bring in the Bulldogs fourth run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Broncos scored their second run in the fourth inning when the second baseman Eslick committed a fielding error to the leadoff hitter. The runner would score on a two-out double to left field. In the fifth, the Broncos leadoff hitter reached on a single and would score on a one-out fielder's choice to cut Gonzaga lead to 4-3.
In the sixth inning, Billy Moon hit a two-out single up the middle and Bolinger followed with a RBI double to left field to give Gonzaga a 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the seventh. Andy Hunter and after he advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, Sturdivant hit an RBI single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Chism would hit a two-out single but a first baseman error allowed Sturdivant to score.
The Bulldogs were not done scoring. After Martin doubled to lead off the ninth, Chism hit a two-out single up the middle to allow Martin to score in the Bulldogs eighth run.
After a week off, the Bulldogs will travel to Provo, Utah, to play future WCC member Brigham Young University Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. PT. The Cougars will join the WCC next season.
