PORTLAND, Ore. – Marco Gonzales’ single to center field broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning and Cody Martin secured the Gonzaga University baseball team’s 3-2 win over University of Portland in the West Coast Conference series opener Friday.

Royce Bolinger doubled down the left field line to lead off the ninth, Clayton Eslick laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance Bolinger to third and Gonzales brought him in with a single to give the Bulldogs (27-14-1, 10-3 WCC) the 3-2 lead. Cody Martin retired the Pilots (17-26, 6-7 WCC) in order to record his ninth save of the year.

Ryan Carpenter (7-1) earned his fourth straight win after throwing eight frames, striking out nine and scattering six hits. Gonzales, Bolinger and Eric Lane both recorded two of the Bulldogs nine hits to lead the team. Tyler Chism and Cameron Edman both turned in a hit to match Bolinger’s team-best hitting streak to 12 games.

Kyle Kraus (4-5) had a strong performance on the hill for the Pilots, going 8 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.

The Pilots got on the scoreboard first with a one-out solo home run in the second inning, the only extra base hit Carpenter allowed in the game.

The Bulldogs offense broke through in the fourth inning. Tyler Chism led off the fourth inning with a single to the shortstop and Edman, who moved to the third slot of the batting order for the first time this season, followed with a double down the left field line. Billy Moon tied the game 1-1 with a RBI single to center field. After an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt, Clayton Eslick hit into a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Moon to score the Bulldogs second run.

Carpenter got into a jam in the fifth inning. He got the leadoff hitter to fly out to Chism in right field but he loaded the bases hitting a batter and walking the next two. He got the second out a fly foul ball to Edman behind home plate but a four-pitch walk tied the game 2-2. He would get out of the threat striking out the next batter. He would finish the day retiring the next nine before handing the ball to Martin in the ninth.

The Pilots would retire the Bulldogs in order in the sixth and seventh innings but Lane led off the eighth with a single through the right side and advanced to second on Chism sacrifice bunt but the Bulldogs couldn’t bring him in as Kraus retired the next two batters to end the inning.

The Bulldogs will send Tyler Olson to the hill for game two Saturday at 1 p.m.
