As a junior in 2017, Shanks earned All-King County honors and helped lead Mercer Island High School to a 21-3 record and third-place finish at the WIAA State 3A Baseball Championships. The two-year captain hit .333 on the season with a .419 on-base percentage, four homers, 20 runs scored and 26 RBI in 24 games. Last summer, Shanks earned a spot on the Area Code Baseball team. As a freshman starter in 2015, he was also a part of MIHS' state championship team.

Why Shanks chose Gonzaga: "I chose Gonzaga because it has everything I want in a college. From the day I first visited, I knew I wanted to be a Zag. I'm blessed to be able to continue my baseball career at such an amazing university. Beyond excited for these next four years. Go Zags!"

Coach Machtolf on Shanks: "We think we are getting the premier right-handed power hitter in the state of Washington. Alex has a very bright future, and will be a great Zag on the field and in the classroom."
