St. Louis, Mo. - Clayton Mortensen, a former standout for the Gonzaga University baseball team and current St. Louis Cardinals prospect, as been named a non-roster invitee to the Cardinals' Spring Training in Jupiter, Fla. Mortensen, who was recently named one of St. Louis' top prospects by Baseball America, is one of 11 pitchers that was named to the 24-man list.

Mortensen, a native of Rexburg, Idaho, was the 36th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as the right-hander was selected by St. Louis in the compensation round held between the first and second rounds.

Mortensen spent his first summer of professional baseball with the Batavia Muckdogs, a Class A Short Season affiliate, and the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Cardinals' Class A affiliate. In total, he posted a 2.67 earned run average with 68 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched.

In 2007, his season year at Gonzaga, Mortensen led the Bulldogs with a 9-2 record, 3.92 earned run average and 122 strikeouts. In 16 starts, Mortensen threw six complete games and one shutout. His 122 strikeouts place him tied for fourth in the Bulldogs' single-season record book, while his 119.1 innings pitched places him second in the single season ranks. Mortensen finished West Coast Conference play with an 1.60 ERA and an unblemished 6-0 record en route to being named the WCC Pitcher of the Year. For his efforts, he was also named a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America by Collegiate Baseball.
