March 24, 2008

Spokane, Wash. - Marcus McKimmy of the Gonzaga University baseball team has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday.

McKimmy led the Bulldogs (15-8) to a 5-1 week as the Bulldogs took series victories over Utah Valley University and Sacramento State University. The Zags took two-of-three from the Wolverines at home before sweeping the Hornets on the road.

On the week, the senior hit .423 going 11-for-26 with four doubles, a home run and 13 runs batted in. McKimmy also led Gonzaga scoring eight runs and stealing two bases. For the week, he posted four multiple-hit games, including two contests with three hits. Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with Sacramento State, McKimmy drove in five runs on three hits.

For the season, McKimmy leads GU with a .384 average and 30 runs scored.

The honor is the first of McKimmy's WCC career. Last season McKimmy was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week once as he played for San Jose State University before transferring to Gonzaga in the fall. The selection also marks the second of the season for the Bulldogs as Grant Kveder was named the league's player of the week last Monday.

Gonzaga will play five games in the next week as it opens the week with a game at UC Davis Monday. Tuesday, the Zags will travel to Washington State University before returning home to host nationally-ranked Pepperdine University in the opening series of WCC play.
