Zags Sweep Weekly WCC Baseball Awards
April 17, 2001 SPOKANE, Wash. - Coming off its three game West Coast Conference sweep of Portland, a pair of Gonzaga players swept the weekly WCC Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards. Barry Matthews was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week while Kevin Richardson won the Player of the Week honors. It was the second award for both Bulldog players this season. Matthews ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak against Portland to 17 innings as he tossed eight scoreless innings against the Pilots in an 8-0 victory. Matthews opened the game with six hitless innings of work before surrendering a single in the seventh and another in the eighth. The senior starter struck out nine batters and walked only one Portland batter. Matthews now leads the Gonzaga pitching staff with a 5-1 record and 2.70 ERA.
Richardson's hot bat helped Gonzaga sweep the three game series at Portland. The junior spent two games behind the plate while serving as the designated hitter in the other game. Richardson hit .571 (8-for-14) on the weekend with a double, three home runs and eight RBI. His slugging percentage for the weekend was 1.214 while he struck out just once in 15 plate appearances. Richardson hit consecutive home runs during the first game of the series and connected for his third home run in the back end of a series opening doubleheader. The junior currently leads the Gonzaga squad with a .357 average.
