Six Bulldogs Receive WCC All-Academic Honors
May 22, 2017
SAN BRUNO, Calif.--The West Coast Conference office announced its All-Academic awards Monday, and the Gonzaga baseball program was well-represented with six Zags earning recognition for their efforts both on the diamond and in the classroom.
Three Zags - Jeff Bohling, Sam Brown, and Daniel Fredrickson - earned WCC All-Academic honors, matching the program's tally from last season. Bohling, a redshirt senior, has a 3.57 GPA while working on his MBA, specializing in accounting. The Bellevue, Wash., native is hitting .281 this season for the Bulldogs, driving in 22 runs and scoring 25 himself. He's fourth on the team with 50 hits, and he hit a key three-run home run May 14, helping the Bulldogs down then-No. 23 Loyola Marymount 6-5 and remain in the hunt for a WCC regular season title. He's also earned 45 starts at third base on the year.
Brown picked up his second major academic honor of the season Monday, also receiving CoSIDA Academic All-District honors earlier in the month. A senior physical education major, Brown has worked his way into a 3.61 GPA and is on pace to graduate in the fall. The Mill Creek, Wash., native is one of the Zags' most prolific hitters in program history, tying for fourth with 242 career hits and sixth with 208 games played. During his final season in a Bulldog uniform, the outfielder leads the Zags with a .322 average and 64 hits, 11 for extra bases.
Fredrickson is also receiving his second academic award of the month as he joined Brown on CoSIDA's Academic All-West District team. A redshirt sophomore, Fredrickson is holding down a 3.81 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. He has burst onto the scene in his first year of action with the Zags, hitting .342 in conference play to top the squad despite missing the last two series due to injury. He posted 12 multi-hit games before going down, including a career-high four in a win against then-No. 19 San Diego April 7. A strong defender as well, Fredrickson has robbed two home runs in right field.
Another trio of Bulldogs earned WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention: Daniel Bies, Jake Roberts, and Justin Vernia. Bies too has broken out in his redshirt sophomore season, going 5-2 with a 3.77 ERA. The righty from Woodinville, Wash., has picked up wins in four of his last five outings, including May 20 as the Bulldogs downed then-No. 18 BYU 6-2 for a share of the WCC title. He's posted a 2.49 ERA over that stretch, striking out 17 batters in 25.1 innings of work. A business administration major concentrating in finance, economics, and business operations. Bies has tallied a 3.59 GPA.
Like Fredrickson, Roberts too has clicked during WCC play, leading the squad with 24 runs, 24 RBIs, 11 extra-base hits, and a .538 slugging mark. The Plainfield, Ill., native has also served as a top-notch backstop, throwing out more than half of attempted base stealers in conference action. Roberts graduated earlier this month with a degree in sports management and held a 3.30 GPA through the Fall 2016 term.
Vernia has been a second ace on the mound for Gonzaga, going 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 13 starts as a senior. He threw his first career complete game this season against San Francisco March 25, and he also went 23.0 innings without allowing an earned run from March 11 to April 1. In the classroom, the righty from Issaquah, Wash., also graduated on May 14, receiving his degree in sports management with a 3.24 GPA through Fall 2016.
The Bulldogs' three WCC All-Academic Team honorees lead the way, and they are tied for the league lead in total honorees at six with Saint Mary's.
Gonzaga (31-17, 20-7) will wrap up the regular season tonight, Monday, May 22, with a 6:05 p.m. contest at Fresno State. After that, they'll begin WCC Championships play on Thursday, May 25, at 3:00 p.m. against Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs are the top seed in the tournament that will take place at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.
