Spokane, Wash. - Tyson Van Winkle, of the Gonzaga University baseball team, was selected in the 39th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday. The catcher was selected by the Houston Astros as the 1172nd overall pick

The native of Vancouver, Wash. is the 51st overall Zag to be drafted into the MLB as well as the eighth member of the Gonzaga baseball team to be drafted under the guidance of head coach Mark Machtolf, who has served as the Bulldogs' head coach for four seasons. During Machtolf's 18 year tenure as a member of the Gonzaga coaching staff, 23 Zags, including Van Winkle, have been drafted.

The catcher was eligible for the draft after his sophomore season after redshirting last season due to an injury. Van Winkle finished the 2008 season with a .298 average in 47 games played. He went 57-for-191 with eight doubles, three home runs, 30 runs batted in and 28 runs scored. Van Winkle, who started 25 games behind the plate and 22 as the designated hitter, recorded 18 multiple hit games and seven multiple-RBI contests during the season. In 2006, Van Winkle appeared in 20 games before redshirting the 2007 season after appearing in 14 contests, including 11 starts.
