Former Zag Clayton Mortensen Called Up To Cardinals
June 29, 2009
SPOKANE, Wash. – The St. Louis Cardinals called up former Gonzaga University pitcher Clayton Mortensen to the big league club Monday. Mortensen will be wearing No. 54 for the Cardinals in their series opener against the San Francisco Giants in St. Louis, Mo. Monday night. Mortensen earns his first career promotion to the big leagues after recording wins in five of his last seven starts and owning a 7-4 record in 14 starts with the Memphis Redbirds, the Cardinals AAA affiliate, this season. Mortensen, a two-year starter for the Bulldogs, earned West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors in 2007 and was Gonzaga’s inaugural first round pick, selected by the Cardinals as the 36th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur draft. The Rexburg, Idaho native is one of three former Zags to currently be on a big league roster, joining the American League’s RBI leader Jason Bay of the Boston Red Sox and Mike Redmond of the Minnesota Twins.
