Legumina, Trogrlic-Iverson Choose Gonzaga over Pro Ball
July 10, 2018
SPOKANE, Wash. – Two Bulldogs have opted to forgo professional baseball and play collegiately for Gonzaga in 2019 as both Casey Legumina and Nick Trogrlic-Iverson did not sign professional contracts despite being selected in June’s MLB First Player Draft.
“We are ecstatic about Casey and Nick forgoing their professional careers for a year to attend Gonzaga and continue their progress toward their degrees,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “It was also very important to them in this decision process to compete for our fourth-straight WCC Championship as well as a deep run in the NCAA postseason. Both Casey and Nick will help boost a very skilled and exciting pitching staff for the 2019 campaign.”
A six-foot right-handed pitcher, Legumina will return to Gonzaga. The rising junior was selected in the 35th round by the Cleveland Indians but decided not to sign, preserving his collegiate eligibility. Last season as a sophomore, Legumina transformed into one of the top closers in the nation, posting a school-record 13 saves on the season. In 26 appearances on the year, the Chandler, Ariz. native pitched 48.2 innings with a 2.77 ERA, the second-best by a Bulldog in 2018. He allowed 45 hits, 15 earned runs and finished with 52 strikeouts.
“For me, I’m really excited because I think we are going to have a great group of guys this next year,” Legumina said. “We are going to be able to go farther than we did this past year. So I’m pretty excited for that, just because of who we have returning, and with the new guys we have coming in, I think it’s going to be something really special.”
Trogrlic-Iverson, meanwhile, will continue his collegiate career with the Bulldogs despite being selected in the 15th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Oakville, Ontario native will arrive as a junior for the 2019 season after having spent two seasons at Central Arizona College. During the 2018 season, the right-handed pitcher started 13 games for the Vaqueros, finishing 8-3 on the season with six complete games. In 76.2 innings pitched, he posted a 2.35 ERA with 91 strikeouts and 20 earned runs.
