Axel Dench's Collegiate Career

Freshman (1996-97): Joined Gonzaga late in the summer and playing in all 27 games with 20 starts, including final 18 games of the regular season and West Coast Conference Tournament game...lone double-double of the season a career-high 18-point, 18-rebound night at home against Loyola Marymount when he went 5-12 from the field, 8-12 from the line and grabbed 8 offensive and 10 defensive rebounds...scored in double digits seven times...in final seven regular-season games went 25-for-45 from the field for 55.6 percent, upping his season field goal percent to 50.3 to rank 8th in the WCC...went 40-51 from the free throw line for 78.4 percent to rank 9th in WCC...averaged 22 minutes per game.

Sophomore (1997-98): With the strong play of Bakari Hendrix on the inside and increased offensive production from Matt Santangelo and Richie Frahm from the outside, Dench's numbers dropped off slightly…started 31-of-34 games, giving way to Doug Griffin in the starting lineup on Senior Night and again in NIT games at Wyoming and Hawai'i…averaged 5.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg…one double-double for the season, a 13-point, 10-rebound game against Mississippi State at the Top of the World Classic…had one other double-digit rebounding night with 10 at Santa Clara…season-high 14 points twice - against Tulsa in first-round upset at Top of the World Classic and at Saint Mary's…scored 13 points three times…after attempting just one 3-point shot in 1997, stepped up to go 11-30 from 3-point range…started all three games in the WCC Tournament, hitting his only field goal attempt and grabbing 4 of his 5 tournament rebounds in semifinal against San Diego.

Junior (1998-99): Started 3 of the first 4 games, then came off the bench in 30 of the next 31 outings…averaged 15.8 minutes/game, averaged 6.8 ppg and 3.5 rpg…scored career-high 22 points at TCU, going 10-16 from the field…nine games in double digits…turned in a 7-10 night from the field in 16-point effort against Loyola Marymount to go with his season-high 9 rebounds, and went 7-11 from the field on way to 15-point night against Saint Mary's …best outing in the NCAA Tournament was 8 points in win over Florida and 4 rebounds in upset of Stanford…ranked 10th in the WCC in field goal percentage going 86-176 for 48.9 percent.

Misc.: Born 3-12-76...played on two U-18 and one U-20 state championship team in Australia...was selected for 1997 World Championships U-23 squad...nicknamed The Axe.
