John Jakus is in his third season as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Gonzaga men's basketball staff. He served as the graduate assistant for the Baylor University men's basketball program for two seasons before coming to Spokane.
Jakus has more than 11 years of coaching experience, most recently serving as a head coach for Athletes in Action (AIA), an offshoot of Cru Ministries that uses sports as a platform to help people in their spiritual growth. He also coached and managed professionally in Macedonia, helping ABA Strumica make the jump from the second division to the top division and qualified for the Super League playoffs in 2010-11.
Jakus also has professional coaching experience in Bulgaria, Spain and New Zealand, including three years with professional players in Bulgaria. While overseas, he led teams to victories over the Chinese Men's National Team in 2012 and the Mongolian Men's National Team in 2014.
Prior to his time with AIA, Jakus spent four years at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy as a high school coach, where his teams combined for better than an .810 winning percentage. A native of Johnsburg, Ill., Jakus graduated with an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill., and completed his master's degree in Sports Management at Baylor.
He lives in Spokane with his wife Sara and three children.
