Gonzaga Downs Idaho, 60-49
Jan. 4, 2000
MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) - Richie Frahm scored 25 points as Gonzaga beat Idaho 60-49 on Tuesday night.
Casey Calvary added 13 points and eight rebounds for Gonzaga (9-5), which broke a two-game losing streak.
Idaho (5-6) was playing its home opener after opening the season with 10 games on the road. Devon Ford led the Vandals with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Gonzaga won even though the Bulldogs' shooting woes continued. They made only 46 percent of their field goals, and only five-of-19 from 3-point range.
But Frahm connected on nine of 13 field goals, including five-of-seven from 3-point range. The senior made all five Gonzaga treys, giving him 229 career 3-pointers, one shy of matching the school record held by John Rillie. Frahm also had his eighth career game of five or more 3-pointers, his third of this season and his second in as many outings after going 7-of-14 from long range against Colorado last Thursday.
Matt Santangelo, who this week was named one of 30 candidates for the John R. Wooden award given to the nation's top player, scored nine points and dished out six assists. He now has 238 career assists in his pursuit of John Stockton's school record of 554. With the Bulldogs' next three games at home - beginning with Saturday's outing against the University of Texas-Pan American - he has an excellent chance to establish the mark in front of the home fans.
Gonzaga jumped to a 34-21 lead at halftime, as the Vandals connected on just 25 percent of their shots.
Calvary, who scored 8 of his points in the opening half, went 6-of-11 from the field and pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds. He left the game with under 3:00 remaining when he suffered an ankle sprain. Calvary was walking gingerly following the game, and he will be re-examined Wednesday.
The Bulldogs also played without the services of starting center Axel Dench. Dench injured a calf muscle after only 7:00 of the Colorado game and did not return to action last Thursday. He has not practiced since the injury.
