Gonzaga Men Open WCC Play With Victory

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Sophomore forward Ronny Turiaf scored a career-high 25 points Thursday night, leading Gonzaga past Loyola Marymount 85-73 in a West Coast Conference men's basketball opener in front of a sellout crowd of 4,000 in The Kennel.

Blake Stepp added 21 points and nine assists for Gonzaga (10-5).

Andy Osborn led Loyola Marymount (6-10) with 17 points. The Lions have lost 16 in a row against Gonzaga, including 12 staight in The Kennel.

The Bulldogs never trailed after an early 10-0 run that erased a 4-2 LMU lead.

Osborn, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward, hit three of his career-high four 3-pointers in the first half to help Loyola Marymount close to 44-32 at halftime after the Bulldogs had opened as much as a 15-point lead.

The Lions had closed to 56-53 when Stepp started an 11-1 Gonzaga run with a fastbreak layin and one of his five 3-pointers that gave the Bulldogs a 67-54 advantage with 10:39 to go.

Loyola Marymount has lost three in a row and seven of eight.

The Lions shot 53 percent from the field, including 63 percent (5-for-8) on 3-pointers. Gonzaga shot 50 percent from the field, including 42 percent (8-for-19) on 3-pointers.

The Bulldogs remain home for a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m. against Pepperdine, an 82-68 victor at Portland on Thursday.
