Men's Hoops Blows Past San Francisco, 96-73

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Matt Santangelo scored 26 points as Gonzaga pounded San Francisco 96-73 on Thursday night, breaking the Dons' 12-game winning streak.
Santangelo added five assists to break John Stockton's school career assists record of 554, set from 1981-84. Santangelo, a senior, now has 555 career assists. Stockton is the NBA's career assist leader. The record-setting assist came with 16:23 to go in the gamed when he fed a pass to Ryan Floyd who drained a 3-pointer from the left corner. It was Santangelo's only assist of the second half as he played just 13 second-half minutes.
Gonzaga (11-5, 1-0 West Coast) got 20 points from Richie Frahm, who went 7-of-8 from the field. It was Frahm's fourth straight game of 20 or more points. In that streak he's gone 35-for-52 from the field for 67.3 percent, including 19-for-29 from 3-point range for 65.5 percent.Mark Spink added 13 points and Axel Dench 12 for the Bulldogs.
San Francisco (12-2, 0-1), considered Gonzaga's main rival for the West Coast Conference title, got a career-high 21 points from freshman Darrell Tucker, 15 from Shammell Stallworth and 13 from James Lee. The Bulldogs held Kenyon Jones, who entered the game second in the WCC with a 17.1 ppg average, to just 9 points on a 2-for-9 night from the field.
It was Gonzaga's 11th consecutive home victory over San Francisco, and 16th consective home win.
Gonzaga raced to a 51-32 lead at halftime, connecting on 21 of 35 field goals for 60 percent. The Dons made only 13 of 40 field goals in the first half.
Gonzaga led 39-28 with 6:44 left in the first half, and closed with a 12-4
run as the Dons could manage only two field goals the rest of the half. San
Francisco never got closer than 19 points in the second half, and was held to
34 percent shooting in the game.
The Bulldogs welcomed the return of Casey Calvary and Axel Dench. Dench had sat out the two previous games with a calf strain, while Calvary missed one game with an ankle sprain. Zach Gourde, who scored 22 points in Dench's absence, got the start in place of the senior Thursday, but Dench played 23 minutes off the bench. Calvary started and played 22 minutes.
The next action for Gonzaga will be Saturday when Santa Clara, a 64-52 winner at the Portland Thursday night, visits The Kennel Saturday for a 7 p.m. game which will be televised on FOX Sports Net in the Pacific Northwest as well as on Bay TV in northern California.
