Jan. 23, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -Derek Raivio scored 19 points and Gonzaga rebounded from a surprising conference loss last week to beat Portland 80-68 on Monday night.
Portland narrowed it to 62-54 on Taishi Ito's 3-pointer. Sherrard Watson then hit one of two free throws for Portland, but Gonzaga answered with Mallon's layup and Jeremy Pargo's short jumper.
Gonzaga (13-7, 4-1 West Coast Conference) was coming off its first league loss in nearly two years. St. Mary's defeated the Bulldogs 80-75 last Monday.
The Bulldogs had a string of 30 straight victories over WCC opponents, including tournament play. They had not lost a conference game since a 73-70 defeat at San Francisco on Jan. 20, 2005.
Raivio entered as the conference's leading scorer at 19.3 points per game. His father, Rick, was a standout player at Portland and remains the school's career rebounding leader.
Portland (6-15, 2-3) has lost three straight under first-year coach Eric Reveno, a former Stanford assistant. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak at home.
Pilots top scorer Darren Cooper did not start because of a sore knee and toe but finished with 17 points. Ito had 15 points.
Portland cut it to 20-18 in the first half, but Raivio hit consecutive 3-pointers to widen the gap.
Mallon had a 3-pointer followed by a long jumper to give the Bulldogs a 33-22 lead, quieting Portland's fans. Gonzaga led 37-22 at halftime.
Among those in the sold-out crowd was former Gonzaga star Dan Dickau, now with the Portland Trail Blazers.
