SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Axel Dench scored a career-high 28 points as Gonzaga pounded Portland 84-66 on Wednesday night to remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play.
Gonzaga (15-5, 5-0) won its seventh consecutive game of the season, its seventh straight over the Pilots the past four seasons and its 18th straight game in The Kennel, in part by connecting on 24 of 30 free throws. The Bulldogs' 18-game home-court winning streak is the 9th best active streak among NCAA Division I schools. Gonzaga's five seniors have never lost to Portland.
Dench bested his previous career high of 22 points set last season at Boise State.
Ryan Jones scored 27 points for Portland (7-11, 1-4) and Troy Collins added 20 points for the Pilots, both career highs.
Dench scored Gonzaga's first nine points of the second half to build a 43-32 lead with 18:45 left in the game. The Bulldogs pulled away the rest of the game.
The teams will have a re-match Saturday in Portland.
