Men's Basketball Routs LMU 103-56 To Go 8-0 In WCC
Feb. 5, 2000
SPOKANE, Wash. - Six Gonzaga University players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs routed Loyola Marymount University 103-56 Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,020 in The Kennel.
The Bulldogs (18-5, 8-0) won for the 10th straight time in maintaining their one-game lead over Pepperdine University, a winner at the University of Portland to go to 7-1 in the WCC following Thursday's loss at Gonzaga.
The Lions (2-19, 0-8) have yet to defeat a NCAA Division I team this season, and it was apparent early Saturday wasn't going to be the night, either. Gonzaga jumped to a 12-0 lead, LMU got as close as 19-10 and the Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run to all but wrap up the victory.
Gonzaga took a 44-19 lead to the halftime lockerroom as Casey Calvary scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half while going 5-6 from the field. Gonzaga shot a blistering 60.0 percent from the field in the first half, going 15-for-25. LMU, meanwhile, went 6-of-27 for 22.2 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The second half also started in the Bulldogs' favor with an 11-2 run. Matt Santangelo, who scored 15 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers, and Axel Dench drilled a trey for three of his 14 points and the Bulldogs had a 55-21 lead just 2:38 into the second half.
The Gonzaga lead reached as many as 54 points when reserve Kevin Williams got a layin with 1:36 to play for a 103-49 advantage. LMU closed the gap to the final 47-point margin as Gonzaga fell short of the school record for margin of victory at 51 set twice.
Calvary's 16 points were a game high, with Santangelo finishing with 15, Dench and Richie Frahm with 14 each, Jimmy Tricco had 11 and Ryan Floyd chipped in with 10 as the six Bulldogs in double figures.
Gonzaga gets a quick repeat with LMU and Pepperdine, meeting the Lions next Friday and Pepperdine next Saturday in Los Angeles.
