Feb. 13, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ronny Turiaf had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 14 Gonzaga dodged a huge upset by holding off Loyola Marymount 61-58 on Saturday night.
J.P. Batista scored his only three points of the game in the final 9.1 seconds, first hitting a layup and then a free throw to give the Bulldogs a four-point lead.
Loyola Marymount's Damian Miller missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Turiaf was 6-for-8 from the field and 8-for-11 from the foul line. Adam Morrison added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Erroll Knight had 10 points for Gonzaga (19-4, 10-2 West Coast Conference).
Turiaf recorded his 22nd career double-double and his second in as many games, while Morrison posted his third career double-double with 16 points and a game-high and career equalling 12 points. David Pendergraft also contributed on the boards with a career-high nine.
Brandon Worthy and Matthew Knight led Loyola with 13 points apiece.
The Bulldogs shot 42 percent from the floor, while the Lions made only 35 percent. But Gonzaga had 20 turnovers that led to 20 LMU points. LMU had just seven turnovers.
With 12:17 remaining, Worthy hit a layup to give Loyola its first lead in nearly 22 minutes. The lead changed hands twice before Gonzaga went on an 11-2 run, which included a two-handed dunk by Turiaf.
Gonzaga has won six in a row. Loyola Marymount (3-7, 11-12) has lost eight of 10.
After the Lions took a 14-10 lead, the Bulldogs went on a 15-2 spurt, capped by Derek Raivo's 3-pointer.
Gonzaga stretched the lead to 29-19, but Loyola answered with a 7-0 spurt and trailed 32-28 at halftime.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 1 1/2 games in the West Coast Confrence over second-place Saint Mary's.
Gonzaga can clinch no worse than a share of the regular-season title next week at home, the Bulldogs facing the San Diego on Thursday and San Diego on Saturday. The Bulldogs conclude the WCC regular-season Feb. 24 at Portland.
