No. 8 Gonzaga Knocks Off Pepperdine, 91-78
Feb 16, 2002
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Gonzaga couldn't wait to get another shot at Pepperdine.
Once it came, the No. 8 Bulldogs didn't waste it.
Dan Dickau scored 26 points as Gonzaga handed Pepperdine its first West Coast Conference loss this season, 91-78 Saturday night.
The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Waves (18-7, 11-1), who hadn't been beaten since Dec. 28 at Arizona. The streak was the longest in the nation this season.
Gonzaga (24-3, 11-1) had its only conference loss on Jan. 18 at Pepperdine 88-79.
"It's just effort and being aggressive," coach Mark Few said. "I felt we were back on our heels in Malibu the whole game. Tonight we scratched and clawed and got ourselves extra possessions and limited their offensive rebounds."
The Bulldogs, on a 26-game home-winning streak, jumped out to an 11-0 lead thanks to hustle plays from senior forward Alex Hernandez who scored four points on putbacks.
"Coach asked us to step up," Hernandez said. "We've been looking forward to this game since Loyola (Thursday). We wanted it bad."
Pepperdine responded with 3-pointers by Terrance Johnson and Craig Lewis, cutting the lead to five at 16:05.
The Waves were outrebounded 25-13 in the first half, and 45-32 for the game.
"I thought rebounding was the big thing," Pepperdine coach Paul Westphal said.
Glen McGowan led Pepperdine with 26 points, 22 in the second half, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range.
The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 20 with 11:20 left in the second half.
"I knew that with Dickau on the throttle we were going to be alright," Few said. "He is cool, calm, and collective. He is going to get the ball in the right spot and make the right decisions."
Following a Pepperdine timeout at 10:39, the Waves responded with a 10-0 run - cutting the lead to nine with 9:08 to go.
McGowan scored eight straight at one point and hit a jumper to cut the lead to seven with 2:12 left in the game.
"We came back really hard in the last few minutes of the game," Westphal said. "We couldn't get what we needed down the stretch."
