Zags Finish Home Slate With Rout of Pilots
Feb. 19, 2007
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Senior Derek Raivio, playing his last home game for Gonzaga, led the Bulldogs with 20 points Monday night as they defeated Portland 87-67.
The win, combined with the University of San Francisco's loss Monday night at Saint Mary's College, assured the Bulldogs of no worse than the second seed in the upcoming West Coast Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs (9-3) could still tie with USF (7-5) for second place, but Gonzaga would win all tie breakers. Gonzaga trails first-place Santa Clara University (10-2) by one game heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Freshman Parker Emerson led Portland (8-20, 4-8) with a season-high 23 points. Taishi Ito had 15 points for the Pilots, who have lost eight in a row to Gonzaga and 22 of the teams' last 23 meetings.
Gonzaga led 47-21 at the half.
The Bulldogs, trying to win their seventh consecutive WCC regular-season title, shot 52 percent from the field and 41 percent on 3-pointers.
Portland shot 38 percent from the field and 36 percent on 3-pointers.
