Dickau's Trey Gives Bulldogs Title Outright
Feb. 24, 2001
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Dan Dickau's 3-pointer from 23-feet straightaway from the top of the key with 2.8 seconds remaining Saturday gave Gonzaga University a 72-69 win over the University of San Diego, clinching the West Coast Conference men's basketball title outright for the Bulldogs.
Dickau's shot capped a 12-2 Gonzaga run to end the game and gave the Bulldogs (21-6, 13-1) the WCC title outright by one game over Pepperdine University (20-7, 12-2). The Bulldogs also set a school mark with their 13th WCC win, surpassing the previous mark of 12 held by the 1994 and 1999 squads. The Bulldogs won their third regular-season title in the last four seasons, finishing second to Pepperdine by one game in last year's regular-season title chase.
Dickau, who scored 31 second-half points in a 39-point effort in Thursday's loss at Santa Clara, again played a big role in this Bulldogs' comeback that resulted in a victory.
The Toreros led this game for 24:17 after grabbing a 24-23 lead with 5:53 to go in the first half until Dickau's first 3-pointer of the game with 1:36 remaining gave Gonzaga a 69-67 lead. Cameron Rigby knotted the game at 69-69 with a pair of free throws with 1:13 to play.
The teams exchanged turnovers, USD turning the ball back to Gonzaga with 28 seconds to go. The Bulldogs called timeout with 24 ticks remaining. Dickau got the ball deep at the top of the key, started a drive and then pulled up and drained the 23-footer to break the tie.
USD had one last-gasp effort to knot the game. Faced with having to go the length of the court, the Toreros fired a baseball pass the length of the court that was batted out of bounds by the Bulldogs' Calvary, still leaving USD with 1.2 seconds. Inbounding the ball from the sideline, USD's Sam Adamo got a desperation mid-court shot at the buzzer that fell harmlessly away from the basket.
USD took a 67-60 lead with 5:02 remaining on a pair of Tyler field free throws. But a Zach Gourde layin off a Dickau assist, and a Kyle Bankhead 3-pointer off another Dickau assist cut the USD lead to 67-65 with 3:43 remaining.
Blake Stepp made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the deficit to one, and Dickau's 3-pointer put the Bulldogs in front and set up the late-game heroics.
Dickau, who hit 9-of-13 3-pointers and 11-of-18 field goal attempts in Thursday's career-high 39-point outburst, went 4-for-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from long range in scoring 12 points as the Toreros did an excellent job most of the night in denying him the ball in scoring position. Zach Gourde, going inside often as well as hitting the mid-range jumper, kept the Bulldogs within reach most of the night with a career-high 22 points. Gourde went 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Stepp added 11 points.
Calvary had his second straight sub-par offensive night, being limited to 9 points on a 3-of-9 night from the field. He was held to 7 points at Santa Clara. He grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
If Gonzaga had lost, the Bulldogs would have had to look no further than the free throw line to find out why. Gonzaga went 23-of-37 from the free throw line for 62.2 percent. USD hit 20-of-23 from the line for 87.0 percent.
The Bulldogs will return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the USD campus next weekend for the WCC Tournament as March Madness begins. Gonzaga, the top seed, will face No. 8 Saint Mary's College (2-25, 0-14) in Saturday's opening round.
Other first-round pairings have No. 2 Pepperdine meeting No. 7 University of Portland (11-16, 4-10), No. 3 Santa Clara University (18-11, 10-4) taking on No. 6 Loyola Marymount University (9-18, 5-9) and No. 4 and host USD (15-12, 7-7) meeting No. 5 University of San Francisco (12-17, 5-9). USF won the tiebraker for the 5th and 6th spots with LMU by virtue of the Dons' season-sweep of the Lions. Gametimes will be announced later by the WCC.
