Santa Clara Upsets Gonzaga, 81-70

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Nathan Fast scored 23 points and Brian Jones added 22 as Santa Clara upset Gonzaga 81-70 on Friday night, all but ending Gonzaga's bid for a third straight conference title.
The Bulldogs (20-8, 10-3 in the WCC) are a game back behind conference leader Pepperdine with a game to play. The loss clinched the top seed for Pepperdine in the upcoming WCC tournament, to be held at Santa Clara's Toso Pavilion starting March 4. Gonzaga will be the number two seed.
Richie Frahm scored 22 points to lead Gonzaga, which has an all-time regular season record of 3-20 at Santa Clara. Matt Santangelo scored 15 points for the Bulldogs and Axel Dench and Casey Calvary had 14 each.
Jamie Holmes added 12 points for the Broncos (17-11, 8-5).
The Bulldogs scored the first seven points of the second half to climb within one point at 37-36, then eventually took the lead when Dench scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer with 15:54 remaining to play that put Gonzaga up 44-41.
Santa Clara came roaring back, outscoring the Zags 23-8 over a seven-minute period to take a 68-57 lead. Jones hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Broncos the 11-point advantage.
The first half was a collection of wild scoring swings. Santa Clara held a 10-1 lead in the game's first six minutes.
The Broncos then went dry for over nine minutes as Gonzaga scored 14 unanswered points to take a 15-10 lead at 9:45.
In the final four minutes of the half, Santa Clara went on runs of 11-0 and 8-1 to take a 37-29 halftime advantage.
