Calvary, Dickau Each Score 26 To Lead Bulldogs

SPOKANE, Wash. - Veteran Casey Calvary and newcomer Dan Dickau each scored a game-high 26 points as Gonzaga University's men's basketball team defeated the Yakima Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association 103-86 Saturday night in an exhibition in The Kennel.
True freshman Blake Stepp also made a solid debut in a Bulldogs uniform with 19 points, all in the first half, as the Bulldogs raced to a 61-43 halftime edge.
Dickau, who transferred to Gonzaga last season from the University of Washington and sat out under NCAA rules, set the tone early with a 3-pointer for a 3-0 Bulldog lead, and Gonzaga was off and running. Dickau went 5-for-8 from the field, 4-for-5 from 3-point range and a perfecdt 12-for-12 from the free throw line.
Stepp, the freshman from Eugene, Ore., connected for all 19 of his points in the first half and started an 8-0 Gonzaga run with a trey to help Gonzaga to a 24-10 lead at the 12:17 mark. The Bulldogs built the lead to the 18-point halftime margin on the strength of an 18-for-34 half from the field for 52.9 percent, 9-of-17 from 3-point range for 52.9 percent and 16-of-18 from the line.
The Sun Kings, who opened their collegiate tour with a win at the University of Idaho on Thursday, cut into a 20-point second-half Gonzaga lead to get to within 9 points with 6:20 to play. The Bulldogs quickly got the lead back to 14 on a Jimmmy Tricco 3-pointer and a pair of Tricco free throws with just under 6:00 to go.
But Sun Kings' head coach Paul Woolpert picked up his second technical with 4:04 to play and was ejected, Dickau made both ends of a 1-and-1, then sank both free throws on the technical and the Bulldogs were up 96-80.
The Sun Kings had six players in double figures, led by the 13 points of Rosell Ellis, 12 by former Washington STate University Cougar Carlos Daniel and 11 each from David Vanterpool, cut earlier this week by the Detroit Pistons, and Terrell Baker.
The Bulldogs played all 12 players in uniform. Zach Gourde, still reuperating from an early fall knee injury, was on the bench in street clothes. The Bulldogs are still hopoeful he'll be ready for limited action in time for the regular-season opener Nov. 17 at nearby Eastern Washington University.
The final tuneup for the Bulldogs will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Old Dogs AAU exhibition. The Old Dogs AAU are comprised of former Bulldog players.
