SPOKANE, Wash. - Axel Dench scored 26 points to lead six Gonzaga University players in double figures Friday night as the Bulldogs posted a 128-72 exhibition men's basketball victory over Team Concept AAU of Portland, OR.
The game concluded the exhibition season for the Bulldogs, who downed the Old Dogs AAU, a team comprised of former Gonzaga players, 133-60 last Saturday. Matt Santangelo nailed a 3-pointer for an 8-0 lead before Team Concept got on the scoreboard with a pair of Phil Johnson free throws. a Ryan Floyd jumper and another Dench layin pushed the lead to 12-2.
Team Concept came back to tie the game 14-14 as Orlando Williams hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points in a 12-2 Team Concept run. But the Bulldogs put together a 15-0 run for a 29-14 lead with 12:26 to go in the half. Mark Spink's slam dunk started the surge and his layin capped it. Santangelo pumped in two more 3-pointers in the run.
The lead was 46 points - 76-30 at halftime - and Gonzaga head coach Mark Few went to his bench often in the second half as the five starters combined for just 34 second-half minutes.
Jimmy Tricco, a true freshman from Phoenix, AZ, and Spink each finished with 16 points, while Santangelo, Calvary and redshirt freshman Zach Gourde each added 13 points to go with the big night from Dench.
The Bulldogs held a 57-35 rebounding edge with Spink grabbing a game-high 8 rebounds as nine of the 12 players grabbed at least 4 rebounds.
Team concept, which plays at the University of Montana Sunday, was led by the 31 points of Williams. The former University of Oregon player went 10-of-25 from the field, including 9-of-17 from 3-point range. He was the only Team Concept player in double figures.
