SPOKANE, Wash. - Ronny Turiaf scored 18 points to lead No. 16 Gonzaga to an 84-63 victory over Idaho on Friday night.
Idaho, which lost by 50 points the last time it played in The Kennel in 2000, stayed close much of the game and seemed to force the Bulldogs into poor shots. Gonzaga (1-1) is 56-3 at home the past five seasons.
Leading 55-48, Gonzaga went on an 18-0 run that spanned seven minutes to seal the win. Cory Violette had two dunks and a 3-pointer and Adam Morrison added consecutive baskets as Gonzaga built a 70-48 lead with 8:13 to play.
Idaho (1-2) was led by Tyrone Hayes' 20 points.
Turiaf, who sat almost the entire opening loss to Saint Joseph's because of a foot injury, added nine rebounds.
Blake Stepp, the West Coast Conference player of the year, was held to 11 points, but finished with 13 assists.
Idaho closed within 45-39 early in the second before 3-pointers by Kyle Bankhead and Stepp helped push Gonzaga's lead to 53-41.
Gonzaga charged to a 10-0 lead and Idaho did not score until Hayes' free throw with 15:08 left. A 13-4 run, six by Hayes, pulled Idaho within 32-27 with four minutes left in the first.
Six points by Turiaf lifted Gonzaga to a 40-32 halftime lead.
The Vandals, who have had four consecutive losing seasons, stayed within 10 points until Gonzaga's big run.
The schools have played 129 times since 1909, but this was their first meeting since 2000, when Gonzaga's 92-42 win prompted Idaho to cancel the next season's game for competitive reasons.
Idaho Coach Leonard Perry played against Gonzaga twice when he was a guard
with the Vandals, winning in the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
Gonzaga remains home Monday to face the University of Denver at 7 p.m., the middle game of a three-game homstand for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga will meet the University of Georgia in the sold out Spokane Arena on Nov. 29 at 1 p.m.
