Nov. 23, 2001
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Dan Dickau hit an off-balance layup and a pair of free throws with less than a minute left as Gonzaga beat Texas 67-64 Friday night in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Gonzaga (3-1) led most of the game, fell behind, then outscored the Longhorns 11-7 in the final 5 minutes.
Dickau finished with 24 points, shooting 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Corey Violette and Zach Gourde each had 17 points and combined for 21 rebounds as Gonzaga outrebounded the taller Longhorns 44-32.
Texas (1-2) took its only lead, 57-56, with just under 7 minutes to go on a pair of layups by Royal Ivey. After falling behind, Texas closed within a point when Brian Boddicker hit two free throws with 1:18 left.
Gonzaga inbounded and, with the shot clock about to expire, Dickau drove the lane and made a shot between two defenders that bounced off the glass and fell in with 47 seconds remaining.
Chris Owens' twisting layup with 35 seconds left brought Texas to 65-64.
Dickau was fouled in the backcourt with 28 seconds left and hit two free throws to put Gonzaga up 67-64.
Texas could not score again. Boddicker missed a 3-pointer and Mouton rebounded but missed a short jumper. The Longhorns had the ball under their basket with 13 seconds left, but Gourde blocked Boddicker's 3-pointer and Owens missed at the buzzer.
Ivey led Texas with 15 points.
Gonzaga will meet the winner of the Indiana-Marquette game in the tournament final Sunday.
