No. 8 Gonzaga Breaks Away At End
Dec. 19, 2005
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Adam Morrison scored 29 points, just above his Division I-leading average, to lead No. 8 Gonzaga to a 75-65 victory over Eastern Washington on Monday night.
J.P. Batista added 22 points for the Bulldogs (8-2), who have won four straight games overall and 20 in a row over Eastern Washington since 1990.
Freshman Rodney Stuckey had 20 points for the Eagles (4-5), who led by five points in the second half in the game played in Spokane Arena.
Morrison, who came in averaging 28.4 points, has scored at least 25 seven times this season. Morrison scored seven points after Eastern tied the game for the sixth time in the second half, 60-60 with 5:35 to go.
Gonzaga led 36-32 when Stuckey scored seven points during Eastern Washington's 9-0 run to open the second half. Eight of the 14 lead changes in the game were in the second half.
Gonzaga entered the game shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 82 percent at the free throw line. Against Eastern Washington, however, the Bulldogs shot just 43.1 percent from the field and had to make their final nine free throws to shoot 71 percent for the game.
The Bulldogs outscored Eastern Washington 36-18 in the paint and 25-4 off turnovers. Stuckey, an inexperienced point guard on a team with just one senior, had six of Eastern Washington's 16 turnovers. Gonzaga was charged with only six turnovers.
Eastern Washington forwards Jake Beitinger and Kellen Williams scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, but they were held scoreless in the second half.
Morrison and Batista each had six rebounds.
