Dec. 28, 1999
HONOLULU (AP) - Richie Frahm scored 23 points and backcourt mate Matt Santangelo added 14 Tuesday night as Gonzaga ran away from Ohio, 83-55, in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic.
Frahm hit 8-of-13 shots, including 4-of-8 from the 3-point line, as the Bulldogs (8-3) raced off to a 49-20 halftime lead and never looked back. Freshman reserve Zach Gourde added 12 points, all in the first half.
With the scored tied at 7, Gonzaga went on a 21-7 run to put the game out of reach. Frahm scored eight consecutive points during the spurt, hitting a basket, a 3-pointer and converting on a three-point play.
Ohio (7-4) was hampered the the inability of its high scorers to put points on the board. Sanjay Adell, Shaun Stonerook, Anthony Jones and Brandon Hunter, who came into the tournament with a total average of 56.8 points per game, totaled only 31 points. They shot a combined 12-of-35.
For the game, the Bulldogs made 28-of 53 field goals, including 8-for-20
from long distance.
