Bulldogs Fall To Upset-Minded Ducks, 70-64
Dec. 29, 1999
HONOLULU (AP) - With its scoring leader having an offnight, A.D. Smith and Darius Wright picked up the slack to lead Oregon to its second upset in as many nights, a 70-64 victory over Gonzaga in the championship round of the Rainbow Classic.
Smith finished with 22 points and seven rebounds and Wright added 20 points to power the Ducks' attack. Alex Scales, who started the game with a 16.8 scoring average, went 1-for-12 but pulled down nine boards.
In the opening round, Oregon (8-1) upended No. 19 Wake Forest, 67-66.
Gonzaga (8-4), which until last week was in the Top 25, appeared to have the game in control, building a 10-point lead midway through the first half.
But Bryan Bracey came off the bench to kick-start the Ducks with five quick points en route to a 34-34 tie at the midway mark.
Bracy put Oregon ahead for the first time with a pair of free throws at the start of the second half, but the game remained close until Smith knocked in six points during a 9-2 run that gave the Ducks the lead for good.
Casey Calvary led Gonzaga with 16 points, but was only 7-of-15 from the foul
