Zag Men Turn Attention To Wearing WCC Crown Again
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - After completing a perfect 5-0 run against Big 12 competition with Monday's 69-68 win at Oklahoma State University, Gonzaga turns its attention to regaining its West Coast Conference regular-season crown when WCC play opens Thursday at Pepperdine University.
The Zags had a streak of 11 straight WCC regular-season titles halted last year when Saint Mary's College claimed the title. Gonzaga's streak was the second-best all-time behind UCLA's 13 straight Pacific-8 (now Pacific-12) Conference titles from 1967-79.
At the end of the 1993 season Gonzaga trailed Pepperdine University 26-6 in their series dating back to 1965, but the Zags enter Thursday's game with a 42-31 lead in the series. The Bulldogs bring a 22-game series winning streak into Thursday's game, and Gonzaga has gone 35-5 in the last 16 seasons. Pepperdine's last win was 88-79 in Malibu, Calif., on Jan. 18, 2002. The 22-game winning streak is the Bulldogs longest current winning streak against a West Coast Conference team.
