Gonzaga Climbs To 11th In AP Poll

Jan. 3, 2005

NEW YORK (Ticker) - For the fifth straight week, Illinois and Kansas remained the top two teams in the latest Associated Press college basketball poll released Monday.

Top-ranked Illinois (14-0) received 62 first-place votes and 1,787 points overall. Kansas (9-0), which posted an overtime win over Atlantic Coast Conference power Georgia Tech on New Year's Day, picked up 10 first-place votes and 1,724 points overall.

The ACC, which had its record run of seven ranked teams come to an end with North Carolina State and Virginia dropping out of the poll, still has plenty of heavyweights remaining.

The third through fifth spots belong to ACC with North Carolina (12-1), Wake Forest (12-1) and Duke (9-0).

Continuing its soft non-conference schedule, Syracuse (13-1) moved up a spot to sixth and is followed by Oklahoma State (9-1), Kentucky (9-1), Georgia Tech (9-2) and Connecticut (8-1).

Gonzaga (10-2), which had a win over Oklahoma State and a loss to Missouri last week, rose a spot to No. 11. Washington (12-1) is 12th followed by Arizona (11-2), Iowa (12-1) and Texas (10-2).

After having its 48-game home-winning streak against non-conference teams snapped with a shocking 69-66 loss to Bucknell on Sunday, Pittsburgh (10-1) dropped six spots in the rankings to No. 16.

Louisville (11-2) is 17th followed by Mississippi State (12-2), Alabama (11-2) and Michigan State (8-2).

West Virginia (10-0) entered the poll at No. 21 and is followed by Maryland (8-2), Cincinnati (11-1), George Washington (8-2) and Boston College (11-0), which also is in the rankings for the first time.
