Gonzaga Jumps To 17th In Coaches Poll

Jan. 3, 2005

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Wake Forest, North Carolina and Duke each received a boost at the expense of Oklahoma State in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday.

The Cowboys (9-1) suffered a 78-75 loss to then-No. 21 Gonzaga on Tuesday, falling three spots to sixth. As a result, the Demon Deacons (12-1), Tar Heels (12-1) and Blue Devils (9-0) each climbed one spot to third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

That trio trails top-ranked Illinois (14-0), which received 27 first-place votes and 771 points overall, and No. 2 Kansas (9-0), which claimed the remaining four first-place votes and 742 points.

Syracuse (13-1), the 2003 national champion, improved one spot to No. 7, followed by Kentucky (9-1), defending champion Connecticut (8-1) and Georgia Tech (9-2) to round out the top 10.

Texas (10-2) moved into the No. 11 slot, followed by Pittsburgh (10-1), which tumbled five spots following a 69-66 loss to Bucknell on Sunday. That setback ended the Panthers' 48-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents.

Arizona (11-2) climbed one spot to No. 13 after opening its Pac-10 Conference slate with a 97-79 victory over Arizona State.

The Wildcats are followed by Pac-10 rival Washington (12-1), Iowa (12-1) and Louisville (11-2).

Gonzaga (10-2) appeared primed for a substantial rise in the rankings before being dealt a 63-61 loss by Missouri on Thursday. The Bulldogs did advance four spots to No. 17.

Alabama (11-2) dropped five spots to No. 18 on the heels of a 76-62 loss to Wisconsin on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide rebounded with a 68-57 victory over New Orleans on Saturday.

Michigan State (8-2) is ranked 19th, followed by Cincinnati (11-1), Maryland (8-2) and Mississippi State (12-2).

West Virginia (10-0) entered the poll at No. 23 on the strength of three wins during the week, including an 82-69 road triumph over then-No. 15 North Carolina State, which subsequently dropped nine spots to No. 24.

The Wolfpack are followed by George Washington (8-2) to round out the poll while Virginia (8-2), which was No. 25 last week, dropped out.
