Upcoming Men's Basketball On ESPNU

Jan. 4, 2006

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball team will play two televised games in the upcoming weeks on ESPNU, the first at Saint Mary's College this Saturday at 8 p.m. PST and the second Jan. 14 when Pepperdine University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for an 8:30 p.m. PST start.

Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth has already received several telephone calls and e-mails about the lack of availability of ESPNU on cable systems throughout the northwest.

"We understand ESPNU is not available on most cable television systems," Roth said. "However, the decision to put some West Coast Conference games on ESPNU was a joint agreement between the WCC and ESPN and as members of the WCC we must abide by that decision. I regret these two games will not be available via cable to a vast majority of our fans in the Spokane area and elsewhere."

Because ESPNU is a competitive entity no different than any other commercial station, it is not possible for a local station or a local cable system to pick up the game. As was the case when ESPN2 was launched, cable companies across the country are in constant negotiations with ESPN to add ESPNU to their station lineup. However, no agreement is in place with Comcast in Spokane - or anywhere nationally - at this time, but local Comcast cable officials are hopeful ESPNU will eventually become a part of the Comcast offering. It took 16 months of negotiations, for instance, to get ESPN2 on the basic Comcast package in Spokane.

ESPNU currently has distribution agreements with DirecTV, Dish Network, Adelphia, Insight Communications, Mediacom, Verizon and several smaller cable MSOs (multiple system operators).

All Gonzaga games are also available on the radio on 1510 KGA in Spokane as well as through this website via audio streaming and CSTV's All-Access subscription.
