Gonzaga 20th in USA TODAY/ESPN Poll

Jan. 10, 2005

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga fell three spots to 20th while the Top 10 welcomed one newcomer in this week's USA TODAY/ESPN men's college basketball coaches' poll.

The Bulldogs, 17th a week ago, took the slight dip following last weekend's West Coast Conference opening weekend split at Santa Clara and Saint Mary's. After winning their 17th straight regular-season WCC game against SCU, the Bulldogs saw that streak and a 17-game winning streak against SMC fall two nights later in an 89-81 setback.

The new team in the Top 25 isn't a stranger to the NCAA elite. Texas climbed two spots to ninth this week, swapping places with Connecticut. Georgia Tech, as high as third earlier this season prior to a loss to Gonzaga, moved up two spots to eighth, changing positions with Kentucky.

The biggest movers this week were Michigan State, going from 19th to 12th, Cincinnati, going from 20th to 13th, and a pair of previously unranked teams in Boston College getting into the poll at No. 17 and Oklahoma sneaking in at No. 25.

No. 21 Maryland, a weekend loser to No. 4 North Carolina, No. 2 Mississippi State and No. 4 North Carolina State all dropped out of the Top 25.
