Bulldogs, Gaels Put Undefeated WCC Marks On Line Thursday

SPOKANE, Wash. - The first big test of the West Coast Conference season faces Gonzaga Thursday when they travel to Moraga, Calif., to face undefeated Saint Mary's College.

Gonzaga (3-0) and the Gaels (4-0) are the lone undefeated teams remaining in the WCC after just two weeks of action. The Gaels ran their overall record to 15-2 with Monday's WCC home victory over the University of San Francisco, while the 13-2 Bulldogs come into the fray following a home sweep of Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University last Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Game time Thursday from Moraga is 8 p.m. on ESPN2.

Gonzaga has won or shared the last 11 West Coast Conference regular-season titles, the Zags sharing the title with Saint Mary's College last season at 11-3 and with Pepperdine University in 2002 at 13-1. The last team other than Gonzaga to win a WCC regular-season title outright was Santa Clara University in 1995 with a 12-2 mark. SCU and Gonzaga tied for the title in '96 with 10-4 marks and SMC and SCU tied for the crown in '97, also at 10-4.

Following last week's sweep of Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University, Gonzaga take a season-high 8-game winning streak into Saint Mary's College.

Gonzaga leads the all-time series with Saint Mary's College 53-25 and is riding a two-game winning streak, taking last season's West Coast Conference Tournament title 75-63 and winning at Saint Mary's 89-85 in overtime on the way to winning their final eight WCC games to knot the Gaels for the regular-season title. SMC became just the second WCC team to win in the McCarthey Athletic Center with a 73-71 victory in the first meeting a year ago.
