Bulldogs Participating In WCC Zappos.com Shoe Drive
Jan. 14, 2011
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University is participating in the 3rd Annual West Coast Conference Zappos.com Shoe Drive and will be collecting shoe donations Saturday at the men's basketball contest against Loyola Marymount University at the McCarthey Athletic Center, with the game starting at 5 p.m.
Any style, size, new or used, will be accepted and will contribute to GU's donation to the conference-wide initiative, benefiting Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that distributes shoes across the world. Since the agency's inception in 2005, over 12 million pairs of shoes have been distributed in more than 125 countries; their efforts have also provided relief for those affected by the Asian tsunami, Haiti earthquake, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In the two previous WCC Zappos.com Shoe Drives, over 15,200 pairs were collected by the eight conference institutions. The institution that collects the most shoes will be recognized at the 2011 WCC Basketball Championships and will be awarded a student party on their campus. The Basketball Championships will be used as a platform to distribute shoes to at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area.
GU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC.) is championing the cause, amongst several other service projects they are involved in throughout the year. SAAC is comprised of representatives from each Gonzaga athletic team whose main purpose is to serve as a student-athlete voice regarding student-athlete welfare within Gonzaga's athletic department, the West Coast Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
