GAMES PRIOR TO GONZAGA: 1/14 at Portland.

Gonzaga opened defense of its West Coast Conference title last weekend with a 68-60 win at Saint Mary's followed by an 81-68 victory Monday at Santa Clara. The Bulldogs and Loyola Marymount, which visits the McCarthey Athletic Center on Monday, escaped the first weekend of WCC action as the only two undefeated teams.

Junior Adam Morrison was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week with Loyola Marymount's Matthew Knight. Morrison scored 25 points against Saint Mary's and 34 at Santa Clara. He averaged 29.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.0 assists, shot 53.8 percent from the field (21-for-39) and 93.3 percent from the free throw line (14-for-15) in the two wins.

Gonzaga has moved into the top spot this week in free throw percentage in the NCAA Division I rankings through games of Tuesday. The Bulldogs, who hit an amazing 43-of-47 for 91.5 percent from the line in the two road wins to open West Coast Conference play, are now 295-for-362 for 81.5 percent. Gonzaga moved ahead of Saint Joseph's, which slipped to second at 80.3 percent. Gonzaga went 25-for-26 from the line for 96.2 percent in the WCC opener at Saint Mary's, the eighth time this season Gonzaga has made 20 or more free throws in a game. The 96.2 percent was the third best single-game percentage in school history. Gonzaga went 20-for-20 against Eastern Washington on Dec. 11, 1993, for the school record, and went 27-for-28 for 96.4 percent this season against Michigan State for the second-best mark. Gonzaga connected on 27 straight free throws in that game after missing its first attempt. Gonzaga made its first 13 and its final 12 sandwiched around the one miss against SMC.

Gonzaga has won 11 straight West Coast Conference regular-season games. The Bulldogs lost 73-70 at San Francisco last season before running off nine straight to end the regular season, and have opened this season with two straight. Dating back to last season's WCC Tournament the Bulldogs have won 13 straight over WCC competition. Gonzaga, which has won or shared seven of the last eight WCC regular-season titles, went 14-0 in West Coast Conference play in 2004, the first team since Pepperdine in 1992 to run the regular-season table. The Bulldogs posted back-to-back 13-1 seasons in 2001-02.

Junior Adam Morrison (1,361 career points) passed John Stockton (1,340), Cory Violette (1,342) and Bill Suter (1,354) to move into 13th on the all-time Gonzaga scoring list when he scored 34 points Monday at Santa Clara. On his current pace he would finish with 1,725 points through the end of the regular season that would be good for fourth on the all-time list. Ronny Turiaf is currently fourth with 1,723. Frank Burgess is the all-time leader with 2,196, a mark Morrison would easily break should he decide to return for his senior season. Burgess and Jim McPhee (2,015) are the lone 2,000-point scorers in Gonzaga history.

Once again Gonzaga has two players sitting atop individual categories according to the latest NCAA Division I statistics released Tuesday. Adam Morrison continues to lead the NCAA Division I scoring race at 28.0 ppg, and Derek Raivio is the nation's top free throw shooter at 95.6 percent. Raivio is now 43-for-45 from the line for 95.1 percent.

While Adam Morrison is the center of attention when it comes to scoring, few people probably realize his 6.1 rpg are second on the team behind the 8.5 rpg of senior J.P. Batista. Morrison has grabbed five or more rebounds in all but two of Gonzaga's 15 games this season, including a season-high nine against both Maryland and Saint Louis.

Pierre Marie Altidor-Cespedes grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in Gonzaga's win over Santa Clara. The sophomore from Montreal had six last season against Idaho for his previous best.

With last Saturday's win at Saint Mary's, Gonzaga snapped a string of five straight wins in which they had trailed in the second half. Gonzaga led 36-25 against the Gaels and never trailed in the second half. The last SMC lead was19-18 with 11:03 to go in the opening half.

Since missing his first free throw of the game New Year's Eve against Saint Joseph's, Derek Raivio has made 16 straight. Raivio had a streak of 28 straight snapped Dec. 17 against Virginia, starting this season a perfect 20-for-20 and making his final eight of last season. He tied the school record a year ago with 41 consecutive free throws. Raivio is a career 91.2 percent free throw shooter, connecting on 155-of-170 attempts, to sit atop the Gonzaga career percentage chart.

J.P. Batista has grabbed 32 rebounds in the last three games for a 10.7 rpg average. Included in that stretch are 15 against Saint Joseph's that matched his career high. He's had four double-digit rebounding games this season - 13 against Michigan State and 10 each against Washington and Santa Clara to go with his 15 boards. He recorded his fourth double-double of the season and the eighth of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds last Saturday at Santa Clara.

Gonzaga has won eight straight against Pepperdine and 23-of-28 since the second meeting of the series in 1993. That has cut a once dominant Pepperdine lead of 26-5 in the series to a not-so-imposing 31-28 edge over the Bulldogs. Gonzaga has won seven straight home games in the series.

Gonzaga will seek to regain a share of first place in the current home court winning streak chase on Saturday against Pepperdine. Southern Illinois won a pair of home games last week to run its streak to 31 to forge ahead of both Gonzaga and Illinois who are tied for second at 30. Illinois hosts Michigan on Saturday while Southern Illinois doesn't play at home until Jan. 22 against Illinois State. The 30-game Gonzaga streak is the second-longest in school history. The longest streak in Gonzaga history is 34 games from Dec. 1, 1992-Jan. 3, 1995, which was the second-longest streak in the country at the time. Gonzaga also had a 29-game streak Feb. 19, 2000-Dec. 20, 2002 that Saint Joseph's ended on Dec. 31, 2002.

Two Gonzaga players have reached the 600-point plateau this season. J.P. Batista reached 600 points with his 32 points Dec. 31 against Saint Joseph's and Derek Raivio with his 18 points against Virginia on Dec. 17. Raivio now has 676 career points, Batista 639.

Junior Sean Mallon reached the 500-point plateau in his career in Saturday's win at Saint Mary's, the native of Spokane now with 510 career points.

Some players are starting to enter - or close to cracking - the Gonzaga career charts. Derek Raivio's 131 career 3-point field goals and his 293 attempts are both ninth. Adam Morrison's 510 career field goals are ninth, just four shy of John Stockton and eighth. Morrison's 260 free throws are within striking distance of the Top 10 and Casey Calvary's 289 career makes. Raivio is approaching the Top 10 for assists, his 215 just 69 shy of Jeff Condill and 10th.

Gonzaga has not lost back-to-back games since the 2002-03 season when the Bulldogs lost Dec. 28, 2002, against Stanford 81-71 in the Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland, Calif., and Dec. 31, 2002, at home to Saint Joseph's 79-78 in overtime. Gonzaga has played 94 games since that Saint Joseph's loss without losing back-to-back games.

With a Feb. 11 non-conference home game remaining on the schedule when Stanford visits the McCarthey Athletic Center, Gonzaga has won 43 of its last 44 non-conference home games.
