Men's Basketball Seeks LA Road Sweep Saturday At LMU

LOS ANGELES - Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team completes its three-game West Coast Conference road swing Saturday at Loyola Marymount University in a rare 1 p.m. matinee.

The Bulldogs downed Pepperdine University 70-53 Thursday in the opener of their current two-game Los Angeles swing to move to 5-1 in the WCC. Gonzaga has at least a two-game lead over everyone in the WCC with the exception of BYU (4-2) and Saint Mary’s College (3-2).

Gonzaga leads the all-time series with LMU 58-23 after taking three games from the Lions a year ago. The Bulldogs won in Los Angeles 88-43, at home 74-55 and in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas 66-48 to give the Zags a modest 8-game winning streak in the series.

The Bulldogs have won 37 of the last 40 meetings dating back to 1996. The last win for the Lions was a 74-66 verdict at Gersten Pavilion in 2010 where the Bulldogs have won 8 of the last 10 meetings. LMU’s last win in Spokane was Feb. 7, 1991, by a 91-79 verdict. The Zags have won 22 straight in Spokane, including the title game of the 2006 West Coast Conference Tournament when Chris Ayer missed a layin at the buzzer as the Zags escaped 68-67. Gonzaga head coach Mark Few is 29-3 versus the Lions while LMU head coach Max Good is 1-11 against the Zags.
