Zags Home To Face USF Trying To Keep Pace In WCC Chase

SPOKANE, Wash. - It seems as if every game Gonzaga (14-3, 4-1) plays has big implications for the Bulldogs to stay in the West Coast Conference chase.

After splitting last week's road trip at league-leading Saint Mary's College (17-2, 6-0), an 83-62 setback, and at Loyola Marymount University (10-8, 3-2), a 62-58 victory, Gonzaga returns home this week to face the University of San Francisco (12-8, 2-4) Thursday and the University of San Diego (6-11, 1-4) Saturday. The Bulldogs suffered their first WCC setback in the battle of unbeatens at SMC, and now try to at least maintain pace with once-beaten BYU (5-1), also a loser at SMC in the WCC opener back in late December.

Gonzaga has won the last two meetings against the University of San Francisco since the Dons took a 96-91 overtime victory in San Francisco in the first meeting last season. But the Bulldogs won the re-match in Spokane 70-53 and downed the Dons 71-67 in the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinals.

Gonzaga leads the series 43-21 and has won 24 of the last 27 meetings between the teams since the 1999 season. USF has not won a game against the Zags in Spokane since Feb. 10, 1989, when the Dons topped the Bulldogs 67-64 in the Martin Centre which sits next door to the McCarthey Athletic Center.
