Bulldogs Up One Spot To No. 15

Jan 19, 2004

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University moved up one spot to No. 15 in this week's Associated Press Top 25, the Bulldogs running their record to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the West Coast Conference with last week's home sweep of the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary's College.

Duke University took over the No. 1 spot in this week's poll with 45 first-place votes, thanks to longtime rival University of North Carolina that toppled the University of Connecticut, dropping the Huskies from first to fourth in this week's balloting of sportswriters.

Stanford University (14-0), which defeated Gonzaga earlier this season in the Pete Newell Challenge, remained one of four undefeated teams in the Top 10 and moved from third to second with 24 votes for the top spot. Saint Joseph's University (15-0), which downed Gonzaga in the season opener in Madison Square Garden in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, received one first-place vote and moved from sixth to third.

The University of Cincinnati (13-0) received two first-place votes and rose from 10th to sixth, and the University of Pittsburgh (18-0) moved into the top 10 from 13th to eighth as the other two undefeated squads in the Top 10.

Gonzaga plays just once this week, heading to the University of Portland for a Friday night game to been seen on Fox Sports Northwest beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Pilots (8-9, 2-2) ended Gonzaga's 21-game home winning streak against West Coast Conference opponents last year.
